Creating Surfaces
A wide range of techniques and materials are covered including using 3D medium on
paper & fabric, using plastics (including ideas for recycling), use of transfer
media, printing and painting on fabric and needle-felted surfaces. A range of

Dyeing Fabrics
Methods of managing the dye process in the classroom including tray dyeing and
dyeing in plastic bags. Looking at the use of different types of dye and the

Needle-felting
Also known as needle-punching, this is a dry process using wool fibres and a
special needle with a series of notches cut into the sides. These notches pull
the fibres down and mesh them together. Using this method it is possible to sculpt
heads and whole figures or to create rich and interesting surfaces that can be
further embellished with stitch.

Silk Painting
We will cover the basics of using gutta to create and outline and applying the
paint. A range of special effects can be used to give texture and interest to
the design and these are easy to achieve. This workshop will cover the easiest
and most effective of these and a range of samples will be produced.

experiment with transfer paints, transfer crayons, solvent transfers, wet gel
transfers and methods of using an inkjet printer to print directly onto fabric.

Cyanotypes

Using Withies
Withies are the young shoots from willow trees and are so flexible that they can be
used to make 3D structures. Ideally suited for working on a large scale they offer endless
scope for sculpture. A course with this beautiful natural material will include making
structures, covering the skeleton & developing the surface.
